I am the Bizot Family Professor of History at the University of Memphis, where I teach courses on the civil rights movement, the modern United States, and the history of American sports, as well as survey courses on African American History and the United States since 1877. I have served as department chair and as the director of the Marcus W. Orr Center for the Humanities. Along with Jaime Schultz, I am the editor of the “Sport and Society” series published by the University of Illinois Press.

I hope that this website provides not only an introduction to my books, but also some additional insight into them. Each book page includes a short essay that explains some aspect of how I came to write it, as well as a list of questions that might be useful for stimulating discussions or writing projects.

For updates, insights, book reviews, author interviews, and more, please see my Facebook page. To reach me or learn more about my books, please see the Contact page. Thanks!
